The Relationship of VR Porn, Consensual Sex & Ethical Problems

If you’ve been following VR porn at all you’re likely aware there are many different concerns regarding how it will affect our society. Personal relationships, consensual sex and more have been raised into question. In fact, there’s already a group of Newcastle University researchers that have been studying how VR technology is affecting the everyday lives of people. This group presented their research and findings at the ACM CHI Conference 2017.

VR Warnings

The researchers are warning about the potential problems that could results as VR technology continues to advance. Once a person has the ability to become an actual ‘participant’ in a VR porn scenario where they can actually ‘interact’ instead of just observing on the other side of their screen, many things could potentially happen.

The researchers are suggesting that the ability to simulate a real life sex act using VR technology could have serious consequences. One’s moral behavior could be altered after consuming VR porn meaning a person that can partake in a ‘fantasy’ sexual encounter might be more likely to attempt to live this fantasy in real life too. There’s already a fine line between enjoying a VR sex fantasy and violating the privacy and content of others illegally. VR technology could very well be the reason a person might cross this line.

VR Porn Experience Study

At Newcastle University, there were 45 volunteers that wanted to participate in a study involving VR porn. For this study, the volunteer is a virtual character and has a name – Jack. So for each VR experience they are acting as ‘Jack’ in the scene. Once they finished the VR experience they provided feedback to the experts to be analyzed.

Two Groups

The feedback received was split into two different groups. The first group is volunteers that experienced the ‘perfect’ scenario. This means they were introduced to a VR experience that they later deemed to be “better than the real thing.” The second group is volunteers that experienced a ‘precarious’ experience. This means the people in group 2 enjoyed sex acts in their VR experience that would currently be damned by society. Whether it’s violent, humiliating, offensive or degrading to women, the sexual acts wouldn’t currently be accepted by our society. The group of researchers included examples of exploitation and sexism that currently happens today without advanced VR technology.

In addition, Bondara claimed on a recent report that by 2030 it will be very easy for people to partake in VR sex and have access to it. It will be just as easy as it is to go online and view traditional 2D porn today except there will be sex robots in homes by 2025; likely the wealthiest homes first. By 2050 it will be more popular to have sex with a robot than with another actual human. This will ultimately lead to a significant decrease in sexual interaction between humans.

VR Porn – Is It Cheating?

There has been a lot of chatter regarding VR porn and cheating. Some feel that it enables a person to cheat while others don’t believe that it’s cheating at all. It’s a controversial topic indeed.

CamaSutraVR, a tech startup in the VR porn industry, announced last month that their new technology can actually capture a real porn actress’s 3D character. It can then rig the avatar so that the user controls the movements of the avatar. Now, this could be a good or a bad thing. We already know that people don’t always use new technology the way it was meant to be used. Will it be any different for VR users?

The other concern is people using this new technology to illegally capture an avatar without that person’s consent. They could then use it for VR porn. A person could also use it to capture the 3D avatar of their partner and then use it, or share it illegally.

Experts have suggested that there is a definite possibility of VR porn leading to people having unrealistic sexual expectations in their real relationship. If a VR user can do and act as they please it could harm the moral and ethical relationship they currently have with a partner.

While it’s easy to focus on the negative impacts VR tech could bring about in the adult entertainment industry, let’s not forget there are also positive impacts. It’s all about individual responsibility by the user and it’s hard to say what will actually happen.
